Spring Intern - Elna Babu
Elna started as an intern for OHAAT in January while pursing her Public Health Degree at Gwynedd Mercy University. She’s helped out in a variety of ways, from hosting volunteer groups, assisting with incoming deliveries, bedtime bag packing, books bundling, and donation sorting to assisting with bed referrals. We’re sad that Elna’s time with OHAAT is coming to an end, but wish her all the best in the future. Learn about her intern experience with the Beds for Kids program below:
How will you use your OHAAT experience in your future roles?
This internship has increased my knowledge of community engagement and nonprofit operations. Working closely with families and supporting the supply of needed resources has helped me gain important communication, organizational, and advocacy skills. To carry on this experience, I want to apply a caring, community-first approach in all of my future public health and human services positions. Additionally, it has strengthened my resolve to address housing and health disparities and confirmed my passion for working with excluded communities.
What were you looking for in an organization to intern at?
While searching for an internship, I wanted to work for a company that offered practical experience, enjoyed a meaningful mission, and had strong community ties. I desired to be a member of a group that really improves people's lives. OHAAT went above and beyond my expectations. It has a clear mission and immediate influence on kids and families.
What has your favorite part about interning at OHAAT been?
The relief and happiness when caregivers receive a bed for their child has been my favorite part. Simple yet impactful, it serves as a reminder that something as basic as a restful night's sleep can provide respect, support, and an overall feeling of security. Even in a small way, it has been greatly helpful to have added to that impact. Thank you again for the opportunity to intern with OHAAT. It’s been an experience I will carry with me always.
