Volunteer Spotlight: Barry Muth
At One House at a Time (OHAAT), we have some of the best volunteers around. This month we would like you to meet Barry Muth. Barry has been a part of the OHAAT family since 2012. He was first introduced to OHAAT by his dear friend and OHAAT Board Member, Emily Jeske. Barry served as a member on our Board and has even delivered over 1000 beds to children! We are so thankful for Barry and his commitment to our mission. We recently asked Barry about his involvement with OHAAT and this is what he said:
1. What attracted you to the cause?
When the issue of children not having beds was brought to my attention, it was so sad to think about. Every kid should have a bed to sleep in.
2. What do you like to do when you aren't volunteering?
In the pre-covid world, I loved live music and attended many live shows.
3. What is your favorite part about delivering beds?
Favorite part? Seeing the kids without a doubt. They are happy and excited and you can't help but tap into that happiness!
4. What was your most memorable delivery and what was so special about it?
We delivered 2 beds to a gentleman named Gary. The man was overjoyed in the truest sense of the word. He got the whole volunteer team together and told us that he had been in and out of trouble in his life, but he was dedicated to turning his life around, and a big part of that was going to be regaining custody of his 2 daughters, ages 2 and 3. He was going to be regaining custody that very day because he first needed to have beds for them, the beds we were delivering!. I think we were all incredibly touched by what Gary had shared with us, and we all walked out of his house on a cloud. Gary later sent OHAAT pictures of his 2 daughters in their new beds. What a joy!
5. Of what contribution or achievement are you most proud?
Since the weekend volunteer events have been postponed, due to the virus, two part-time employees have been doing the bed deliveries during the week. One of them hurt his shoulder, and I was able to step in and help continue with the bed deliveries without disrupting the OHAAT employee day to day duties.
