Sleep Awareness Week
OHAAT isn’t the only one celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2023--Sleep Awareness Week is also marking 25 years! Sleep Awareness Week will take place from March 12-18. This annual event serves to remind everyone that sleep is a crucial part of our health & well-being.
Few things impact physical & mental health more than sleep. Healthy sleep is important for just about every part of a child’s development. It is critical for overall health & well-being, along with academic performance, mood, & behavior. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, children aged 2 years need 11-14 hours of sleep, children aged 3-5 years need 10-13, children aged 6-12 years need 9-12 hours, & those aged 13-18 years need 8-10 hours.
OHAAT encourages everyone to celebrate this week by thinking about their sleep habits and taking steps to improve them where possible! Healthy sleep habits include:
Going to bed at the same time every night
Following a calming bedtime routine (brushing teeth, washing face, reading a book)
Keeping electronics out of the bedroom (phones, tablets & TVs)
Avoiding drinks with caffeine
