Charlotte's Pillowcase Project

Charlotte's Pillowcase Project

Seventeen-year-old Charlotte Murray has a passion for sewing and for using that skill to help others. As a student at William Penn Charter School, she started a project that not only teaches other students to sew but produces beautiful pillowcases for the children in OHAAT’s Beds for Kids program.

Last year Charlotte raised funds to purchase fun and colorful fabric at a discount from Gaffney Fabrics in Germantown. Then every week Charlotte and six to ten other high school students went to a special classroom with sewing stations to prep and sew the fabric. Once complete, each pillowcase was folded and packaged in a zip-lock bag with a label that says, Made for you with love by your friends at Penn Charter School. Charlotte also coordinated a large volunteer event on MLK Day of Service where 50 students and faculty members came together and sewed 26 pillowcases. Charlotte’s project donated 100 pillowcases last school year, and her goal for this year is 150 pillowcases!

OHAAT receives handmade pillowcases from several organizations and individuals, including William Penn Charter School, and they are distributed by volunteers during bed deliveries. For many of the children that OHAAT serves, picking out a pillowcase for their new bed is very exciting and the highlight of the delivery. We are incredibly grateful to Charlotte for helping to make this possible!
