OHAAT and Bryn Athyn College Team Up on MLK Day
OHAAT and Bryn Athyn College (BAC) teamed up on MLK Day for a service event benefiting OHAAT’s Beds for Kids program. Thirty volunteers from BAC – both students and professors – spent several hours delivering beds, sorting books, and making blankets and pillows.
BAC brought their own box truck, and for the first time ever, OHAAT sent out two delivery trucks at once. Imagine that! OHAAT serving TWO houses at a time! Fifteen volunteers split in 2 groups and drove into North Philadelphia where they delivered 17 beds to 6 families. The parents expressed immense gratitude, including two who couldn’t help but shed a few tears. The children were all-smiles and particularly rambunctious. At one of the deliveries, the children quickly set up their new beds so that they could test the bounciness of the mattresses.
While half of the volunteers were out making deliveries, the remainder helped prepare items forbedtime bags. They sorted several hundred books by age and gender and bundled them into packs. They also put their DIY skills to the test by making no sew blankets and T-shirt pillows.
“Martin Luther King would be proud of students at BAC today and every day,” said Professor Laura Nash. Luke David, a sophomore and the class vice president echoed her sentiment: “We accomplished a lot today with Beds for Kids and celebrated as a family of friends for the benefit of others. That is true giving.”
OHAAT is grateful to BAC for giving so generously and making the MLK Day event a success! Special thanks goes to Rev. Jim Goodyear and Gloria Dei Church for hosting the event!
