Board Spotlight: Karen Kooman
Karen Kooman has been volunteering for the Beds for Kids program since 2019, joining the OHAAT Board of Directors in 2020.
A Vice President at PNC Bank, Karen is also very involved in her community. A founding member of the OHAAT Volunteer Committee, she spearheaded this year’s shoe drive fundraiser that was a great success in not only raising funds, but awareness of Beds for Kids. Karen and her husband, Kevin, have three active daughters who are learning first-hand the value of hard work and giving back to their community.
1. What is your profession and what is your favorite part of your role?
I have been with PNC Bank for over 30 years, primarily with the Corporate Banking division. My role has provided me with exposure to many different industries. I have always enjoyed the close working relationship with our clients and the support role we are able to play toward the success of their business.
2. How did you come to be a part of the OHAAT Board of Directors?
I participated in my first OHAAT bed delivery with my daughters through a volunteer opportunity with our church. My oldest daughter could not wait to go on another delivery and decided to make Beds for Kids her high school graduation project. As we became more involved with bed deliveries and supply drives, I was eager to give more time and energy to OHAAT through a position on the Board.
3. What about the OHAAT mission and work really motivates you?
I have always concentrated my volunteer time on children, through opportunities with my employer, our church and in the community. I admire that OHAAT’s mission is focused on a good night’s sleep for children. Sleep plays a vital role in a child’s physical and mental well being and is critical to maximizing their potential at school.
4. What message would you like to share with OHAAT friends and supporters?
I am grateful for all of OHAAT’s friends and supporters and would encourage them to continue to use their gifts and talents to support our mission. Every child deserves nutritious meals, access to a good education and a bed of their own, and it is highly rewarding to be part of that effort.
